Through all the research that I have done over the last little while, the IPhone is a good choice. Here in Canada we have quite a few choices with regards to service providers. So my next decision is who I will go with WRT a service provider? These screen protectors that are available, just how good are they???????? Would a GOOD case be a better choice? Also, it seems the 32 Gb model is the way to go…

Are you listening, Apple?? Many Verizon users (and there are certainly many of us) would love to purchase the IPhone if Verizon were a carrier. For me, it would be a no-contest decision to upgrade from a Samsung phone and a PALM PDA to the IPhone if it were available on Verizon. As it is, I will probably go with the Palm PRE once it is released to Verizon later this year.

@ Morgan: I guess it all depends what you want to do with it. It’s a great video medium and quite forgiving most of the time but, it demands your attention. It’s not a good phone if you plan to ignore it due to it can’t talk back too well. Example, If you hear/feel it and say, ‘Oh, I’ll get to it later’ then you’re screwed! You may forget. You must SEE if anyone has recently called or texted you. It also does not tell you that the battery is low; it only SHOWS you. Those are 2 major inconvenient problems I believe.
Now, you can casually play your music thru its speaker for casual listening for instance and shake it to change songs – that’s pretty cool. Touch an icon and get the weather or watch the little blue dot move along while you travel your established route in Google Maps or get a TomTom navigation app or surf the web in familiar surroundings as if you was on your home computer or use a decent calculator or pan thru your photos or watch videos or the other +65,000 varied downloadable things. Get a good bumping cover for oopsies and insure it. It’s not water proof -I’m saying this for someone responded to me saying that they live in commune conditions and being paranoid, takes the phone ‘everywhere’, for fear of it being stolen; how sad. Anyway, the things I mentioned at 1st are the major downsides I took for granted and sorely miss but everything else is bang-on beauty (good). Go for it.

Hi, I DREAD my phone right now, the Palm Centro, it falls apart soooo easily and it gets me so mad!! I had to replace this phone before either because AT&T had bad coveage or i kept dropping my phone accidently and the antenna broke. I’ve been wanting the Iphone 3GS FOREVER! My birthday is coming up and I’m having such a hard decision to make for what i want. I REALLY want an Iphone 3GS but my friends say it’s not that great and AT&T isn’t very great either. And now its harder to make a decision after reading these comments you all left, saying that you either loved the phone or you hated it. I DONT KNOW IF I SHOULD GET THE IPHONE OR NOT! I love the apps and everything about the Iphone, and I pretty much only get AT&T service by me, so thats all a plus side. But there is so many down sides too which I;ve already mentioned. So please SOMEBODY help!

I have read many of the comments from both the professional reviewers and the iphone users. Two years ago, I switched from Verizon in order to get the original iphone. (After I started using AT&T cell service I found that I longed for the excellent coverage that Verizon had provided.)

My 2 yr contract has just ended with AT&T. I was seriously looking at replacing my service & phone with Sprint’s Palm Pre mainly because I was disgusted with AT&T’s poor coverage especially in many parts of the Northeast and if I was leaving AT&T I wanted replace my iphone with a cell phone that had many of the same features.

I DO like the iphone, but didn’t like that it did not have voice recognition, and some of the other shortcomings of the original version. I have studied the new coverage map for the 3GS and more areas including my workplace now seem to be covered that were not covered under the original system. Today, I just put in my order for an upgrade phone (3GS). It was backordered. I hope that I will not regret my decision. I will let you know what I think when I get my new 3GS in a couple of weeks!

As far as I am concerned, AT&T service has always been really good. I get 5 bars in my house and 3g speeds of 1.8mb to 2.3mb/s so I can’t complain especially coming from t-mobile where I never got more than 1 bar and the highest 3g I have ever gotten with them anywhere is about 675 kbits/s so I am really happy with At&t. The reason apple went with At&t is they both spent about $150 million developing the iPhone over 2 years. Go to wikipedia and enter iPhone and u can read all about how they both developed the iPhone. Anyways, I am loving my 3g s…fast and smooooth!

Great reading all these comments. I’m getting my first iPhone next monday. A 16 gb so I can shoot & edit video of my sculpture and stills of my paintings to E-mail them to galleries. I’ve had problems with verizon and sprint. So AT&T it is. Not a perfect world but the iPhone has 50,000 aps. I good with that.

I am bored with all these “make it Verizon” whines. The iPhone works on GSM technology networks, like most of the wireless networks around the world outside the US. Can you figure why Apple chose to do that????
Verizon, like most US wireless carriers have chosen to go the CDMA (or TDMA) technology direction.
It isn’t a matter of government interference, AT&T outbidding the others, or Apple’s scheming… it’s just a reward to AT&T for being international in its scope of strategizing, and their decision to deploy the technology that the most cellphones in the world use..

I have had the iphone for years, upgraded when needed to, the coverage is better than or equal to other. I went to Canada this year and last not a problem in Bear country. Yes anything could be better but I am satisfied with my at&t service.

The iPhone sounds and looks like a great investment, but those of us who have had AT&T before know that their service is not compatible with the iphone. AT&T’s service is lousy and it sucks, the calls always drop or don’t go through and the internet connection is horrible! I definitely will purchase the iPhone when you make Verizon Wireless as a choice for service providers. It makes no sense to purchase such a great phone when the service will be so horrible.

I downloaded v3.0 for my iPhone G3. I was really hoping it would have an audio reminder someone called alert feature. Unfortunately, it does not. And I’m quite certain the new iPhone 3GS does not.
I’m one of those people that puts the phone down and do other things someplace else. My Razor has it. It works like this: I decided I’m going to get wet; place phone somewhere else. Later, I’m finished getting wet and what do I hear in the distance; BEEP! Someone has tried to contact me in some form while I was getting wet. Every 3 minutes a beep. The iPhone does NOT do that. That just craps me right off! It forces me stop and LOOK to SEE if someone has tried to contact me in some form.

Funny how everyone bashes AT&T for having exclusive rights to the iPhone, I’m sure others had a chance to bid on it and passed. Now our government is talking about it not being fair, give me a break, there has to be more pressing issues out there than iPhone being exclusive to AT&T.

Nice write up on the new phone and 3.0. I’m finally going to upgrade from my original iPhone to the 3GS, mainly for the camera and video. This way I will always have both when I need them to capture candid stuff with my kids. It is worth the price to always have those two things with me.

ATT coverage is the biggest drawback. To say it’s less than desirable ” is a BIG understatement. I would upgrade to a new iphone but why when the coverage is so bad!

I have been using notebooks for 10 years. In that time, I have never had to purchase a spare battery.

For the iPhone, I keep USB cord and plug into a notebook to charge it while I using the computer.

All the iPhones are fabulous. But AT&T sucks. I continue to hang in on a wing and a prayer but don’t plan to spend any more money on a phone upgrade while my basic service is so lousy. And I live in the 5th largest city in the country.
